Highveld Ridge Primary School features at National AstroQuiz

The AstroQuiz competition is aimed at grade 7 learners and is based on themes around astronomy. The competition is run as a knock-out event and teams of four grade 7 learners per school enter, with each participating school being allowed to field one team.Each leg of the quiz involves school teams competing to answer a set of 30 questions. All schools answer the same questions.a

The AstroQuiz aims to improve teaching and learning of basic astronomy in primary schools. The main goals are:

  • To contribute to the improvement of awareness, interest, understanding and insight into basic astronomy;
  • To build appreciation of and pride in South Africa's history of astronomical activity and achievements, and current projects;
  • To record and celebrate the participation of women in astronomy so as to foster interest in girl learners of career opportunities in astronomy.

The Annual National Astronomy competition was held at the Pretoria Zoological gardens during the week of 5-7 October 2017. Each province was represented by one team. Osizweni Science Centre is proud to announce that Highveld Ridge Primary School from Secunda won the provincial competition and placed fourth at the national competition. Learners who represented the Highveld Ridge team are Masindi Nekhubvi, Phindo Malinga, Lesego Dibakwane and Ashlin Budharam.

"AstroQuiz is able to positively influence the academic performance for Natural Science learners in the topic Planet Earth and Beyond. I hope that in future, more leaners are given an opportunity to participate in the AstroQuiz competition as it might expand their sense of future science career options." Daniel Maubane, Osizweni AstroQuiz coordinator.
